You're looking at the last static copy (1999) of Acheron.org, more recent but partial copies exist in the wayback machine. This site is online out of nostalgia and because of it's historic content, an up to date ANSI/ASCII art archive is available from 16colo.rs

1997: A year in perspective
by dangermouse

Well, what a year it has been.
Acheron started exactly one year ago, January 1997. Since then we've covered all manner of scene related news, interviewed just about everyone it seems, and added many new features..

Stop the Press!

Looking back over the last years news files, its interesting to actually see what happened..

Jan:

The whole acid!ansi scandle dies down, and napalm death starts the logo only group lead productions.

Feb:

Girl joins the scene and dies one pack later.

Dieznyik organises the network 97 competition which also dies, and Sodium officially kills of his '9' issue Acrylic Weekly Magazine.

March:

Shade, headed by dfuse and phlare, disbands..

This month also saw the revamp of the acheron site from its crappy frame predecessor. Colornox (acid) was kind enough to supply the 'acid-site-like' graphics, which made the site look a whole lot more professional. Acheron at this point became a little popular, having such people as crowe and pariah joining the team as news co-ordinators.

April:

ACiD Productions attempts to salvage its ansi department by making it a seperate entity called Avenge.

Apocalytpic Visions, one of the largest Australian art groups, releases a pack after a long absense.

May/June:

The tyrone emag, involving such names as Empty, Pariah and Discyple, is officially released.

Lit.org is unvieled to the scene, being run by crowe. I remember acheron getting involved with the site, it being the american mirror of the old australian site (the original). Lit.org went down a few months later, due to crowe having other commitments (ie. moving). The company that was also moving the server to the new location stuffed up to apparently..

Acheron also went under a major overhaul. The old design of colornox went out the door, and a new, easier to navigate site (current) was put in it's place..

Blade releases its 40th pack and Cenobite dies.

July:

Cia announces its 50th pack competition.. Napalm submitted a really cool banner for this competition.. Well, we both liked it anyhow :)

ACiD Productions releases its line of baseball caps! Some of you may have received correspondance relating to this in the mail, with spiffy photos.. [get comment on sales from Radman]

August:

A web ripper is found. The Xtreme site was found to have copied certain images, and the basic layout and interface from the acheron setup at the time.

Scenelink, headed by Neofish, officially opened its doors, and boy did it do a good job on its first issue -- an immediate success.

Mass Murderer quits the scene (again).

The #hirez channel was formed this month, or really, just started grabbing the attention it deserved.

September:

The Knight announces he's leaving the scene, and burps does likewise.

Siva and Decadence (headed by The Calibre and Creator respectively) join forces.

Acheron's rumours section is released only once, reporting items like, "Hennifer quits scene", "TNA leaving AWE [false]", etc..

October:

This month saw the untimely death of NightDee (Levi). The 3D artist, who was well known around scene channels, ended his short life on the 15th of October. RIP Levi.

Acheron got its domain this month, costing the princely sum of $50 / year. :> We'd been hanging out for a domain for a very long time, and this month I decided to get off my butt and do something.

Mistigris released their 3 year anniversary pack!

Cia releases its 50th pack, a three part extravaganza of goodies..

Sodium also decided to release his extremely funny Two Days in the Scene, a tarentino style crime story involving most of the inhabitants of #ansi and #ascii. Reportedly the story got 100 hits in the first day of being releasedon sodium's offer bot.

November:

Someone decided to spread around that Sodium was dead, falling from his window whilst trying to break back into his house to retrieve his keys. The mentioned party wasn't too happy about it, due to his group being stuffed up, and how he died in such a dumbass manner:

" It sure fucked up my group. I would have rathered had died like fighting an intruder or getting shot in some covert op.. not falling out of my window like a dumbass. "

The ACiD rc5 team was going pretty strong, in its bid to crack the code before other major corporations and universities did..

This month also saw the release of the design.tcsourceone.com ftp server, which creator hoped would serve as an alternate area for pack releases.

November also saw the return of Pariah to the ascii scene news co-ord, having been absent for a number of months, reporting his usual release dates, and a new RemorseDraw. Meatpod also joined the ascii news team.

A new groups section was added this month also, for a number of reasons. Earlier in the year I had the idea of a group index, encompassing group news, members and packs. The group news section was a trade off for this section, realising a bigger section would have meant competing with scenelink. The first month only saw news from Zeus II, representing FUEL.

December:

The big news this month was the bungled attemted suicide of Retribution, poor bastard.. Basically, the real story goes like this..

Ret got into a huge fight with his parents, and they both drove off to let off steam, leaving ret by himself. Ret called up this chick to come around and cheer him up, and like, yeah, maybe get lucky.. Whilst this girl was over, he got a page from her cousin saying "You were incredible" (and Ret did not ever have sex with this chick), and the girl with him got REALLY REALLY mad at him, and she left..

ret Ret was now at the lowest point of his life.. He got a 9mm handgun and held it to his head.. But, his senses came back to him, and he realized what he was doing.. In the process of pointing the gun away from himself, Ret's thumb accidently set off the trigger, resulting in the gun going off. The bullet either grazed or went through his shoulder, he isn't sure..

He was found by his mother unconcious, and promptly taken to hospital. He awoke the next day.. The two girls came to visit him, both appologising, especially the one who sent the message.. Remember, suicide aint worth it..

The other big news this month of course was the demise one of the scene's largest groups, Twilight Studios/Productions/etc.. :) The group was formed in November 1996 by Deeply D.

Radman decided to use acheron as a launch platform for the ACiD Gathering '98: The Inebriation, which was held at Cluck U!

Scenelink came back to the scene with its december issue, after an absense due to site redesign, and general rethinking..
