I'd like to take a moment to digress and lay off the ansi related talk for a bit and just shoot the shit, not as scenesters, but as plain old guys and gals. Just forget I'm maestro and I'll forget you're a schmoe and we can dish over coffee! So what's going on? How's life? Anything exciting going on lately? Anything really shitty? I WANT THE SCOOP! I work graveyard shifts at Subway, and some woman who owns a real restaurant got a deli style breakfast sandwich the other day. She told me she thought I was fast and was giving good customer service, and that I should apply for work at her restaurant. That's my life. Now you kiddies who still live with your parents that pay for everything see how good your life is compared to mine. Enjoy.

Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do. The graveyard shift must suck though. Ugh. So you gonna take the job at the restaurant? Kiss her ass and present yourself in a professional manner and maybe you can get a managerial position or something.

Veggie grinders rock.

A friend of mine who also works (worked) at Subway went to a restaurant and applied, blatantly LYING that he had 2 years waiting experience. He was hired on the spot. He was fired on his first day.

No point, just kinda funny.

I wish the old hag across the street would quit trying to look in my windows at night to see what I am up to. (Yeah, I'm wankin.....fuck off)

I think that for Leo to mention a female with a nice ass without offering visual evidence is uncouth.

Okay, here's me:

I'm 19.

I work full time in the corporate office of a national mall-based retail chain which shall remain nameless.

I work on art and dick around online on weeknights.

I spend weekends with my girlfriend, who is also fucking awesome, and has a nice ass. Here is a picture of us, though the ass is not in evidence.

I usually go to a punk show or two on weekends.

I'm not in school right now, but I will be this fall. I swear.

I'm going to make a living as an artist, or starve trying.

I guess that's it.

Thank you.

Hi, I'm napalm and i have a drinking problem.

Ok.. no I dont, i just have problems in general, but I won't go into those here.. hmm, in the real world:

i'm 20, i'm a full-time undergrad student at the School of Visual Arts in NYC, 3rd year, second semester, Computer Art major focusing on 3d design and animation.

I work at Marvel Comics in the online/interactive department making web sites, site content, programming/designing/testing games and stealing a whole bunch of free soda. Been working at marvel for about a year and a half now.

In my spare time I relax by doing my homework and depriving myself of sleep in my spacious one bedroom apartment in Greenpoint, Brooklyn where I live with myself, my computer and my stereo.

My turn-ons include long walks off a short pier.

If i have any spare time ever, im either asleep or out at some bar being sloppy. I try to get out to snowboard every few weeks, i've been snowboarding for about 7-8 years now. one day I hope to rule the world.

Just curious, do any of you listen to commerical radio and if so what formats (oldies, pop, urban, rock, etc.) do you listen to the most? Now, if you could have your own radio station what would you do different from commerical radio? Would you do away with goofy guys like myself and just have continuous music? Would you stick to a certain format or would it be a mixture of everything? Would you sell air time or make it commercial free?

How do you finanace a radio station with no commercials?

Anyway, if I ran a radio station, I'd probably just try to play some DIFFERENT music. More variety, and some stuff that you can't hear on Mtv and can't buy at Tower Records.

I only listen to co-op or university radio stations, which do have DJs but not irritating ones. They are supported by co-op memberships and slices of tuition fees, and they play music you won't find anywhere else.

The only two radio stations I listen to here are both public stations, without commercials. One is basically university-affiliated, and is financed through public funding (not sure how close the relationship is to the university, fiscally) and also through listener contributions. Right now I'm listening to the tail end of a special 2-hour Nirvana show, as part of a week-long rock marathon that started today. I'll be contributing my $20 sometime this week. Normally the station plays a wide variety of shows: classical, jazz, folk, and rock. There's no playlists, and the typically 2 hour long shows run on a weekly schedule, each one having a theme of some kind. It's a million times better than commercial radio because DJ's can play whatever they want, and of course there's no commercials, just a few PSA's every now and then. I'm constantly hearing music I've never heard before, and that to me is what radio should be about... if I wanted to hear a song over and over, I'll buy the album or get an mp3.

The other public station I listen to has a "modern rock" format, and even though it's public, funded entirely by listeners and underwriters, it's a little disappointing to find that they still stick to the cheesy modern rock format playlist. You do get a wider variety of songs than on the equivalent commercial station where I used to live, though, and they also have nightly specialty shows, but it's still nothing like the other local station.

If I were running a radio station over the net, like a shoutcast server for example, I'd definitely try to set it up with a schedule of different DJ's, each with different themes for their shows.. whatever they're interested in and knowledgable about. I'd have them connect to a main server that would rebroadcast from there (assuming that's possible).

I think the near future may see a revolution in radio broadcasting, as individuals start being able to broadcast over the net without lots of fancy expensive equipment, allowing people to finally experience a broad spectrum of music that commercial radio subverts. It would be sort of the equivalent of the publishing revolution that the web allowed.

Comercial radio bites imo.

I listen, rarely, to radio.. mostly because I can never find anything I like to listen to, but when I do there are four stations I tune in..

1) The local news/traffic/weather info station. Regular commericals which annoy me greatly. Only really use it to wake up in the morning and find out it's still raining..

2) The campus station. Good cross-section of musical taste, including some half-way decent live drum&bass & house mix sessions late at night. Commericals between shows only, usually for three-five minutes at the end of the hour.

3) The community radio station. Seems to be filled 99% of the time with really loud chinese commericals and talk radio programs, but on friday nights there is a d&b & house show hosts by some silly highschool children..

4) CBC FM. Canadiana at it's finest. Patty Schmidt, David Wisdom, and that guy who plays all the kickass jazz (love the old Blue Notes.. great sound). Commericals varry, depending upon the time of day and the show running.. usually alot of uninterupted music tho.. especially the classical hours during the day.

That enough consumer intel for yah maestro? ;)

I'm all about image and what turns me on about commercial radio is how some stations really put alot of work into creating and marketing that image. Some will argue that sure the station has a really flashy sound and professional feel, but it lacks in content. I actually don't mind tight play lists and spot breakers/sweepers/id breaks in between songs. I hate continuous music! I think it's so boring. If you want that you can just listen to your cd's. I've always felt that radio should be more than just a listening experience. College and community radio turn me off because to tell you the truth, the crudeness of it all just really annoys me. Especially the lame ass wannabe DJ's that get up in front of the mic and try to be so damn cool and end up sounding like a complete fool. :) There's a decent college station here in mass and it's decent because the people that work behind the scenes take it seriously.

One of the things I love about one of the college radio station here is the dj's. I guess you like slickness, as if that's what professionalism or seriousness is. But I like these dj's because all they're doing is speaking from their own experience about what they've decided on their own to play. They're almost always completely relaxed, just talking in a conversational tone. They say stuff off the cuff about what they're playing. In contrast, the other public station has volunteers too, but they've got all this stuff they're supposed to say, and a rote way of doing everything, and it's just obviously unnatural and uncomfortable sounding. I guess I don't mind as much professional dj's who have taken this artificial way of doing things and made it sound comfortable or natural, but it still smacks of commercialism, as if the music is just a commodity to be pushed by these on-air personalities, especially when you add the play-list to the mix. I can understand pure personality-related shows, like Howard Stern, but when you put focus on the announcer, and further on his way of saying things rather than what he's saying that relates to the music, then you're belittling the music, and you might as well not have it in the first place. Or maybe they could just play some hip-hop beats and have the mc rap to it. ;)

Basically, it should all be about the music.

I rarely here anything worth while come out of the DJ's mouths around here besides "ok, umm. now i'm going to play this rad song by this totally rad band that none of you have ever heard of but they like rock so hard so like, here they are.. oops. wrong song, ok, here it is.." and then of course there are those guys that like to tell inside jokes that you just can't relate to or say hi to their friends that none of you know. "uh huh huh, this song is for cindy. because she likes banannas. hey mike, HOW ARE THOSE NOODLES? uh huh huh. uh huh."

As far as being "slick" goes. Yeah, I do like to listen to an on air talent that actually knows what he's talking about and actually has a firm grasp of the english language. ANNNNNND,
you can be a professional and still be real. working in commercial radio doesn't neccesarily mean being fake. I mean, in a sense, it's show business and we all know that show business is never completely "real". When I'm on the air I like to spice up what I'm talking about a bit to make it a bit more interesting and entertaining and it WORKS. I treat the listeners as if they're my friends and we're just hanging out shooting the shit. If an on air talent sounds unnatural and uncomfortable then he/she isn't very good at what they do. :) Commercial radio is commerical for a reason. Because people enjoy it and people buy into it. Commercial radio gets listeners and gets money.

There are things about non-commercial radio I like such as limited restrictions. I will admit, I have alot of constraints when I'm in the studio broadcasting. There are things that I just CAN NOT do. Things that you would think "what the hell is wrong with that?" My ideal radio station would be a non-commercial atmosphere, yet a commerical sound. I need the commmercial flare to keep me pumped up!

My whole view on radio is that it should be all about MUSIC and ENTERTAINMENT.
